As part of the “Camilo Through the Inland Lands” project, which continues the celebrations of the Bicentenary of Camilo Castelo Branco’s birth, the Municipalities of Vila Real and Ribeira de Pena are organizing an International Caricature Competition of Camilo Castelo Branco, which will take place between April 6th and May 18th, 2026.
The objectives of this competition are to celebrate the birth of Camilo Castelo Branco and his connection to the municipalities of Vila Real and Ribeira de Pena, and to bring Camilo’s figure and work into contemporary daily life, seeking to stimulate the (re)discovery and reading of his books.
The competition is open to national and international artists, amateur or professional.
The works classified in first and second place will be awarded prizes of R$ 2,500 and R$ 1,000, respectively.
The submitted works will be exhibited in Vila Real and Ribeira de Pena on dates to be announced later.
Entries must be sent by e.mail by May 18, 2026, to entrequemle@cm-vilareal.pt and the address indicated in the Participation Rules.

The objectives of this contest are:
I. To celebrate the birth of Camilo Castelo Branco and his connection to the municipalities of Ribeira de Pena and Vila Real.
II. To bring the figure and work of Camilo into everyday life today, seeking to encourage the (re)discovery and reading of his books.
Article 1 Participants – This contest is open to national and international artists, whether amateur or professional.
Article 2 Participation conditions
I. The caricatures must be originals. Participants shall declare on their honour that the works they submit to the competition are original and not created using Artificial Intelligence tools.
II. Works considered by the jury to be unoriginal or created using Artificial Intelligence will be excluded.
III. Each artist may enter a maximum of two caricatures.
IV. Only caricatures accompanied by a declaration of copyright transfer for the purposes of this contest and the exhibitions, publicity and merchandising related to it, now and in the future, will be considered for evaluation.
V. The municipalities responsible for this competition may publish the submitted cartoons, either now or in the future, in digital or printed form, always crediting the authors.
Article 3 Requirements
I. Cartoons may be submitted in physical or digital format.
II. Entries must be submitted in A4 format, with a resolution of 300 dpi.
III. Any drawing or painting techniques, whether manual or digital, are acceptable.
IV. Any words or text used in the works must be in Portuguese.
Article 4 – Entries
I. Entries for the competition must be submitted until May 18, 2026.
II. Entries must be sent by e.mail by May 18th (to entrequemle@cm-vilareal.pt) and at the same time, mail the work in digital format or on a USB drive to the following address: Município de Ribeira de Pena (at the attention of Ricardo Carvalho) Praça do Município, 4870-152 Ribeira de Pena, Portugal.
III. Items to submit with the entry:
a) Caricature in physical format or as a file on a USB stick;
b) Title of the caricature (if applicable);
c) Pseudonym of the author;
d) Sealed envelope containing the author’s details: artistic name, full name, full address, telephone/mobile number, and a declaration of copyright transfer for the purposes of this competition.
Article 5 Jury
I. The jury will be made up of the experts Ricardo Machado Carvalho (Municipality of Ribeira de Pena) and Rui Araújo (Municipality of Vila Real), as well as the artist Paulo Araújo.
II. There shall be no appeal against the jury’s decisions.
III. The jury reserves the right not to select a winner if the entries submitted for the competition are not of sufficient quality.
Article 6 Assessment and selection criteria
Caricatures are humorous portraits featuring exaggerated, distorted and comical characteristics. Entries will be assessed according to the following criteria:
a) Creativity;
b) Originality;
c) Linework;
d) Communicative ability of the artist’s personality;
e) Visual impact.
Article 7 Prizes
I. Prizes will be awarded to the entries ranked first and second, unless the jury decides that no entry meets the minimum quality requirements.
II. The winner will receive €2,500 (including VAT).
III. The runner-up will receive €1,000 (including VAT).
IV. The prizes will be awarded on the opening day of the exhibition resulting from the competition or on a date to be specified.
Article 8 Notification of entrants
I. Winning entrants will be notified by email of the jury’s decision by 30 May.
II. The winners will be announced publicly on 21 May.
Article 9 Exhibitions and catalogue
The organising Municipalities shall host an exhibition featuring the competing works (if the quantity and quality of the works so warrant), which will be displayed for successive periods in each of the municipal venues, on dates to be announced. A catalogue featuring all the works on display will be distributed alongside the exhibition. The artists represented will receive a copy of the catalogue.
Article 10 Copyright
I. The authors of the caricatures shall assign their copyright to the organising municipalities for the use of the works in the exhibitions associated with the competition, for the promotion, both present and future, of the competition and the exhibitions, and for any related merchandising.
II. The selected works shall bear the artist’s signature or any other form of identification.
Article 11 Final provisions
I. Entry into this contest implies full acceptance of the terms of these Rules for Participation.
II. Caricatures submitted for the contest may not be published or publicly displayed by the artists prior to the announcement of the results.
Article 12 Omitted cases
Any omissions or situations not provided for in this document shall be resolved by the Competition Jury.
