An important article about the current state of cartoons.

We live in a time of great intellectual and creative crisis. Art is on the very margins of social activities. Artists are literally on the verge of existence, and their works are of almost no interest to anyone. Exhibitions are organized for the sake of form, in order to fulfill the program of some Cultural Center, in order to justify its institutional existence and retain its employed staff. There are no young people at exhibitions, and fewer and fewer audiences at theater performances. Unlike in the past, when artists and art were in demand, today they impose themselves on the audience. And why is that so?
First, the lack of motivation for someone to engage in art. Paintings are becoming worthless, there are no more newspapers and magazines dedicated to art. Here, for example, caricature. At the time when I began to engage in this art, we had numerous magazines dedicated to caricature. Especially the well-known “Jež”. That newspaper published cartoons and paid the authors for each published work. These were very decent sums of money. So young artists also had the desire and motivation for this type of journalism and fine arts. That way they could easily establish themselves and become famous and popular in society. The newspaper was sold throughout the former Yugoslavia in a very large circulation, and thus supported itself. Employees had salaries, and freelancers decent fees. Everything was paid. If you were a guest on television, you received a fee for your participation. If you came from far away, the television paid your travel expenses. If you wanted to listen to a new album by a music group or singer, you had to buy their record or cassette. Today, everything is downloaded from the Internet. For free. Art is “at your discretion”. Cartoonists are happy if their work is published, regardless of whether they were paid for it! Artists are largely to blame for this current status. If they don’t value themselves and their product, who will value them? On the other hand, young people have nowhere to publish their work. The media has no room for humor. Politics is important. Politics is on every page of newspapers and crime stories. Criminals are more well-established than doctors and writers today. They have become public figures. On all TV channels, there are only political shows. That’s how it’s easiest to fill the program, with empty talk… And politics is the most lucrative job today, the dream of every young person. It pays well, you get fame, popularity and a secure existence. And much more than that. That’s why there is no art, that’s why it’s a thankless and prosperous job today. Well, we’ll see how long it will be like that. And maybe we won’t. Who knows…

نعيش في زمن أزمة فكرية وإبداعية حادة. بات الفن مهمشًا في الحياة الاجتماعية، والفنانون على حافة الانهيار، وأعمالهم لا تكاد تثير اهتمام أحد. تُنظم المعارض شكلياً لإتمام برنامج بعض المراكز الثقافية، ولتبرير وجودها المؤسسي والحفاظ على موظفيها. مع تغييب دور للشباب في المعارض. ويتناقص جمهور العروض المسرحية يومًا بعد يوم. على عكس الماضي، حين كان الفنانون والفن مطلوبين، باتوا اليوم يفرضون أنفسهم على الجمهور، لماذا؟
أولًا، انعدام الحافز للانخراط في الفن. فقد فقدت اللوحات قيمتها، ولم تعد هناك صحف ومجلات متخصصة في الفن. لنأخذ الكاريكاتير مثالاً. عندما بدأتُ ممارسة هذا الفن، كانت لدينا مجلات عديدة متخصصة في الكاريكاتير، وخاصةً مجلة “جيز” الشهيرة. كانت هذه الصحيفة تنشر رسومًا كاريكاتورية وتدفع للفنانين مقابل كل عمل منشور. كانت هذه مبالغ مالية جيدة جدًا. لذا، كان لدى الفنانين الشباب أيضًا الرغبة والحافز لهذا النوع من الصحافة والفنون الجميلة. وبهذه الطريقة، تمكنوا من ترسيخ أنفسهم بسهولة واكتساب الشعبية في المجتمع. وكانت الصحيفة تُباع في جميع أنحاء يوغوسلافيا السابقة على نطاق واسع، وبالتالي كانت تُغطي نفقاتها. كان الموظفون يتقاضون رواتب، والمستقلون يحصلون على أجور مجزية. كان كل شيء يُدفع. إذا كنت ضيفًا على التلفزيون، كنت تحصل على أجر مقابل مشاركتك. إذا أتيت من مكان بعيد، كان التلفزيون يتكفل بنفقات سفرك. إذا أردت الاستماع إلى ألبوم جديد لفرقة موسيقية أو مغنٍ، كان عليك شراء أسطوانته أو شريطه. أما اليوم، فكل شيء يُحمّل من الإنترنت مجانًا. الفن “حسب اختيارك”. رسامو الكاريكاتير سعداء إذا نُشرت أعمالهم، بغض النظر عما إذا كانوا قد تقاضوا أجرًا مقابل ذلك! يتحمل الفنانون جزءًا كبيرًا من اللوم في هذا الوضع الراهن. إذا لم يُقدّروا أنفسهم ومنتجاتهم، فمن سيُقدّرهم؟ من ناحية أخرى، لا يجد الشباب مكانًا لنشر أعمالهم. لا يوجد في وسائل الإعلام مساحة للفكاهة. السياسة مهمة. السياسة حاضرة في كل صفحات الصحف وقصص الجريمة. المجرمون اليوم أكثر نفوذاً من الأطباء والكتاب، فقد أصبحوا شخصيات عامة. جميع القنوات التلفزيونية لا تعرض إلا البرامج السياسية، فهذه أسهل طريقة لملء البرامج بكلام فارغ… والسياسة هي الوظيفة الأكثر ربحاً اليوم، حلم كل شاب. إنها مربحة، وتجلب الشهرة والشعبية وحياة مستقرة، وأكثر من ذلك بكثير. لهذا السبب لا وجود للفن، ولهذا السبب هي وظيفة مربحة وإن كانت غير مُقدّرة. حسناً، سنرى إلى متى سيستمر هذا الوضع. وربما لن يستمر. من يدري؟
