Violating myself by (Oscar Fuchs)
They say that when leaving the clinic where he was hospitalized, an employee handed Vincent Van Gogh a stack of hospital discharge papers for the painter to sign. Van Gogh took one of his small paintings out of his backpack and gave it to the official, saying:
– Take it, it’s already signed.
I don’t know if it’s true, I’m not even a Van Gogh, but I also HATE bureaucracy. Artists, in general, hate bureaucracy. But today I sit here to perform a bureaucratic act: write an article. I feel like I’m violating myself, but the sacrifice is necessary.
In the relationships I have with other designers and cartoonists, I expressed my dislike for bureaucracy and, if not all of them, most of them made the same gesture with their hands and said the same thing:
– Oh, this is so boring!
Some of them have already won prizes in countless cartoon competitions, they are true icons. Several said they no longer enter their work in contests that require filling out forms, sending biographies and personal photographs. Not because they avoid having their lives “revealed”, but because it’s too boring. Creating a bio for each contest, filling out an entry form for each contest and still having to upload a personal photo…that’s torture! Isn’t it tiring to spend hours imagining a cartoon consistent with the proposed theme and then spend hours sketching, drawing, coloring and finalizing!?
Yesterday I received an “album” of the cartoons that were selected in a contest. I looked at the album and my drawing had not been selected. “Why?” I asked myself. I’m not a cartoon genius, unfortunately. But looking at the album, I saw that many drawings were not as good as mine, neither in concept nor in execution. And I started to investigate. I found out that I should have sent my biography, personal photo and filled out a form that asks even the blood type. I hadn’t done that. In fact, I didn’t even know I had to. Perhaps I “psychologically blocked” this information because I hate bureaucracy so much. So I came to this computer to “violate” myself and commit this bureaucratic act. I want to make a suggestion to organizers of cartoon contests around the world: Please ask for
these items (biography, form, personal photo, etc) later, not in the selection, but when the cartoon is classified or awarded!
See: when the cartoon is classified or awarded, send the request for these items to be used in the delivery of the prize, as data for the catalog, etc, etc, etc. There’s no reason to do this earlier. For registration, just the work with signature and the e-mail of the candidate for contact, if necessary.
Please cartoon contests around the world, think about this!

Contam que ao sair da clínica onde estava internado, um funcionário alcançou a Vincent Van Gogh uma pilha de papéis de alta hospitalar para que o pintor assinasse. Van Gogh tirou uma de suas pequenas pinturas da mochila e deu ao funcionário, dizendo:
– Pegue, já está assinado.
Não sei se é verdade, nem sou um Van Gogh, mas também ODEIO burocracia. Artistas, em geral, odeiam burocracia. Mas hoje sento aqui para realizar um ato burocrático: escrever um artigo. Sinto que estou me violentando, mas o sacrifício é necessário.
Nas relações que tenho com outros desenhistas e cartunistas expressei minha ojeriza por burocracia e, senão todos, a maioria deles fez o mesmo gesto com as mãos e disse a mesma coisa:
– Oh, isto é muito chato!
Alguns deles já foram premiados em inúmeros concursos de cartuns, são verdadeiros ícones. Vários disseram que não inscrevem mais seus trabalhos em concursos que exigem preenchimento de formulários, envio de biografias e fotografias pessoais. Não porque evitam ter suas vidas “reveladas”, mas porque é muito aborrecido. Criar uma bio para cada concurso, preencher um formulário de inscrição para cada concurso e ainda ter que enviar foto pessoal…isso é uma tortura! Já não é cansativo ficar horas imaginando um cartum condizente com o tema proposto e depois ficar horas rascunhando, desenhando, colorindo e finalizando!?
Ontem recebi um “álbum” dos cartuns que foram selecionados em um concurso. Olhei o álbum e meu desenho não havia sido selecionado. “Por que?”, perguntei a mim mesmo. Não sou um gênio do cartum, infelizmente. Mas olhando o álbum, vi que muitos desenhos não eram tão bons quanto os meus, nem em conceito, nem em execução. E comecei a investigar. Descobri que devia ter enviado minha biografia, foto pessoal e preencher um formulário daqueles que perguntam até o tipo sanguíneo. Eu não tinha feito isso. Na verdade, nem sabia que teria que fazer. Talvez “bloqueei psicologicamente” essa informação por tanto odiar burocracia. Então vim para esse computador para me “violentar” e cometer esse ato burocrático. Quero fazer uma sugestão aos organizadores de concursos de cartuns ao redor do mundo: Por favor, peçam esses itens (biografia, formulário, foto pessoal, etc) mais tarde, não na seleção, mas sim quando o cartum for classificado ou premiado!
Vejam: quando o cartum for classificado ou premiado enviem o pedido desses itens para usar na entrega do prêmio, como dados para o catálogo, etc, etc, etc. Não há por quê fazer isso antes. Para a inscrição basta o trabalho com assinatura e o e-mail do candidato para contato, se o contato for necessário.
Por favor, concursos de cartuns ao redor do mundo, pensem nisso!
