One of the biggest comics authors in the former Yugoslavia Lazo Sredanović passed away yesterday at 83.
Lazo Sredanović, Illustrator, a comic drawer and caricaturist, was the most famous as the author of one of the most popular Yugoslav comics “Dikan”.
He was born on September 19, 1939, and in Herceg Novi, he graduated from the Applied Arts, that in Belgrade in 1965, he graduated from the Academy of Applied Arts, at the Graphics Department in the Professor Michael Petrov.
Sredanovic published the first comic as a teenager, with 14 years in the children’s list of “Pioneers”, and during his studies, Illustrations and cartoons for the “Ferialac”, and illustrated a large number of picture books for children.
And in 1969, he was starting to draw a comic “Dikan”, who dated the “Politika Zavnik”. In addition to Sredanović, the scenario for this cult comic was signed by Nikola Lekić, Ninoslav Šibalić, Milenko Maticki, Branko Đurica and Slobodan Ivkov. It was published for the first time in the 903 issue of the “Politika Zabavnik” in the episode “Buzza Games” and soon became one of the most favorite comics in the former Yugoslavia.
Often compared to the asterix, the comic followed the adventures, ruffled with humor, two old Slavs, Dikan and his faithful companion of Uncle Vukoja. The action of the comic book is located in a time before the great migration of the people, mostly in the Balkans. The heroes of the comics, during adventure, encounter numerous tribes, nations, historical sites and personalities: Sarmati, Gepidi, Hazari, are looking for Atlantis, they meet with Emperor Justinian … and all with a great dose of humor.
16 years ago, a comic album “Dikan: Blue Cave” was also published.
Lazo Sredanović also dealt with the graphic design and illustration of textbooks, magazines and picture books for children, has exhibited at many caricature salons in the country and abroad, received several awards for their work. He lived and created in Krašići and Belgrade, and he was married to Milanko Sredanović, by painting and fashion creautor who passed in 2011.
