😥😥😥
I received a cold and bitter news today from Craiova! Gabriel Bratu, the longest-lived Romanian cartoonist, passed away! He had a few days left and he was turning 90 years old! He was the man who received me with simplicity in his house, he told me many stories from his tumultuous life, he lived and passed through dark and sunny eras, he was close to Maria Tănase, Amza Pellea or a Marin Sorescu, I think that there was no Oltean more lively and sociable than Nea Gabi, as the whole cultural Craiova knew him.
Gabriel Bratu opened not only the door of his personal house, he opened all possible doors for me in the world of caricature, he invited me to all the salons in Craiova, invited me to the dinners given for the invited artists (and they were the biggest!), then I started to get to know the world of Romanian caricature better, to start becoming a collector (from him I received the first caricatures in my collection, but not signed by him, but by Albert Poch, Bour, N. Claudiu, Ciosu and others, names of the resonance of the Romanian caricature!) I soon expanded my knowledge and friendships in the world of this fantastic art, we shared workshops, I had reached the point of telling Gabriel Bratu news, but life went on, I ended up in other corners of world, Nea Gabi stayed in his beloved Craiova, at his work table, from where he created dozens of caricatures daily, from where he then chose what to publish.
Gabriel Bratu was a bit of everything: press caricaturist, layout designer, cartoonist at Animafilm, called to the team by Marin Sorescu himself, then he returned to Craiova, where he became the artistic director of the publishing house Scrisul Românesc, newly founded at the time, and over several years, he founded the children’s book collection of the Craiova publishing house, where he published Olimp Vărășteanu or Laurentiu Sârbu, stars of Animafilm, and Gabriel Bratu himself published successful books in the world of small children, many of which would now cause enthusiastic sparkles in the eyes of small!
Don’t lose the fun on the road, Nea Gabi, wherever you go! Thanks for everything!
